It is veterans who have served our nation with selfless bravery. Whether in the first or second World War, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, or any other battle in our history, veterans of our Armed Services put their lives on the line to keep us safe. Veterans Day was formerly celebrated as Armistice Day, representing a truce or agreement made by opposing sides in a war to stop fighting. Armistice Day originated on November 11, 1919, marking the one year anniversary of the end of WWI. It became an official federal holiday in 1938 and was amended in 1954 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to include all veterans.
